Use of breath in meditation

In Yoga we use Philosophy to re-orient ourselves away from opinions and trivial reasoning; coming instead to a seeing directly of who we are and the nature of our experience. We’ll study Yoga philosophy using Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras as our primary text and include readings from recent works. Yoga philosophy is a practical topic that is not concerned with abstract debates but is focused on finding liberation in this life.
Meditation is the expression of the philosophy of Yoga. Mediation is both the culmination of philosophy and the source of the teachings which we know as philosophy. Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras will also be the primary text for meditation. We will supplement Patanjali’s instruction on meditation with more recent texts that teach Mindfulness or Vipassana.
Pranayama or breathwork or breath-control is the power-tool of Yoga practice. Our life in the world begins with our first breath and continues as long as we breathe. Using our breath we can strengthen our concentration, improve our health and direct our intention to our goal. We will learn and practice the pranayama given in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (and supplement that text with selections from more recent works).
